MCC – July: Block 7 ~Lime

2021 Monthly Color Challenge ~ Patterns by Jen

Yeah! It is month 7 the 4th annual MONTHLY COLOR CHALLENGE hosted by Jen Shaffer ~ Patterns by Jen. Each month Jen releases a FREE PATTERN for a new MYSTERY BLOCK in 6″ and 12″ sizes. Throughout 2021, twenty-seven blog hosts will be featuring their favorite fabrics to inspire your quilting journey. Checkout the intro post (here). We will be sharing our blocks and helpful tips throughout the year.

Now, let’s get creative with the 2021 Monthly Color Challenge. This year’s theme is “fruits and vegetables” and a healthy start to a new year. So, this month we are focusing on limes (green).

With our two green fabrics selected, we are ready to sew. Accuracy is always important when quilting. By taking your time when cutting and squaring up your pieces, your blocks will fit together nicely and the points or seams match. A few moments along the way affords you a quality design.

Isn’t the July Lime Block fantastic? Imagine an entire quilt made with this featured block! It would be a wonderful pattern for scraps.

Over the last month, our family has been on the road more than at home as we work to relocate from Florida to South Carolina. We continue to search for a rental home as my husband is already established at his new job. The feat of moving has been quite a bit more to deal with than ever expected. Due to the unexpected travel, we did not share our June block.

Flying geese can be daunting with oh so worth the time for this beautiful design! My greatest struggle is the square in a square center design. To ensure my points are accurate, I utilize foundation paper piecing. Once completed, I join it with the other traditionally pieced sections.

Helpful Hint: To keep your block pieces organized, use a mini design board. Our design board was made using Dollar Tree foam poster board covered in quilt batting. They design board is a handy method to transport your blocks to the sewing machine and ironing. The chances of turning a piece in the wrong direction is much lower than when we stack the sections.
