Let’s start the new year with some quilting fun! Did you hear the news?! We are blog hosts for the 4th annual MONTHLY COLOR CHALLENGE hosted by Jen Shaffer ~ Patterns by Jen. Each month Jen will release a FREE PATTERN for a new MYSTERY BLOCK in 6″ and 12″ sizes. Throughout 2021, twenty-seven blog hosts will be featuring their favorite fabrics to inspire your quilting journey. Checkout the intro post (here). We will be sharing our blocks and helpful tips throughout the year.

The first step with any project is to gather your supplies. Keeping in mind healthy eating and garden fresh, we pulled deep rich fabrics to highlight the vegetables. While it is always fun to go fabric shopping when starting a new project, we are working thru a bit of the fabric stash.

This year’s theme is “fruits and vegetables” and a healthy start to a new year. So, this month we are focusing on EGGPLANT (purple).

Then it’s time to gather the basic supplies. Event though quilting has been a mainstay in my life for years, the seam ripper is always nearby just in case. I adore a magnetic pincushion, seam gauge, sharp thread scissors and rotary cutter, rulers – and most definitely a rotating cutting mat.

Don’t have a rotating cutting mat? Consider using a 12″ x 18″ or 18″ x 24″ mat and simply rotate it when needed. The smaller size is great for travel and storage. Why use a rotating mat? Less moving of your fabrics when cutting or trimming; therefore, more time to sew.

Other favorite tools I always have nearby are my Project Wool pressing mat. The 14″ square mat is great for sewing events and travel. The larger mat, measuring 20″ x 50″ is forever on my ironing board. The crisp, flat seams sew together much more smoothly.

Besides a dependable sewing machine, a basic quality sewing tool is an iron. The Oliso mini iron is excellent for assembling blocks. The compact size is very portable.
